Because of the above average exposure to the sun, Skin Cancer is an important topic for those of us who spend time on the water. I'd like to share my experience in the hopes that my fellow boaters will take heed and be extra cautious about prevention and early detection.
For the last 20 years, I've used sunscreen every day on my face and almost always worn sunscreen on any part of my body that was going to be exposed to the sun. I've read about and kept a watch out for those brown or black irregular or changing spots on my skin -- knowing they may indicate the onset of skin cancer.

I’m not a writer, nor am I an insurance person, but I am a boater and after spending some time with the BoatUS CAT Team (Catastrophe Team) I learned a number of things:
1. There’s no such thing as a boater having no insurance; they are actually self insured. If your boat ended up like one of these at any of the marinas we visited, you will still have to pay to have your boat removed and disposed. After the 7am CAT Team meeting, we jumped into the car and drove to Galveston Yacht Basin. What should have taken 30 minutes ended up taking over 2 hours due to the traffic getting on to Galeston Island! The island wasn't open to the public yet and they had a security check point that brought the highway down to just 2 lanes. Most of the traffic consistant of trucks with ladders and cleaning equipment trying to get out to the island to help with the clean up.

After leaving Galveston, we headed for Clear Lake. There was still a very long line of cars, acutally mostly trucks and SUVs, heading for Galveston Island. I imagine they were mostly workers heading there to help clean up the island.
Our first stop on Clear Lake was Watergate Yachting Center.

After visiting Watergate, we drove around the corner and visited Waterford Harbor Marina and Yacht Club. What a difference between the two marinas! Waterford was better protected, plus they have floating docks with very tall pilings.
I was so amazed at the difference between the two marinas that I didn't take an still photographs, just this video.

Scott Croft, (Assistant Vice President for BoatUS Public Relations and an editor for BoatUS Magazine) and I flew to Houston and met up with Chris Laundry (Senior Reporter from Soundings Magazine). This is the first time the CAT Team is allowing anyone other than CAT Team staff to attend their staff meetings and go out into the field with them.
