I am writing this final blog entry for the 2008 boating season from the salon of Bee Weems at her new longterm berth at Anchor Cove Marina in Anacortes, Washington. From Annapolis to Anacortes! What an adventure this has been!

The big news is that we have arrived at our final destination with time to spare so that we can enjoy the nearby Apostle Islands for a few days! We have learned over the years that when the weather is right its best to go the distance, and in this case, we're glad we did. Lake Superior is a force to be reckoned with. We have been on her waters for 11 days now and we have seen the wind blow from every direction imaginable. Many days the wind changes direction two or three times a day. The line of demarcation between Georgian Bay and the North Channel isn’t totally clear to me, but I believe the town of Killarney designates the transition from one body of water to the other. It’s located on a very narrow channel between two larger bodies of water. We anchored in a bay about 5 miles from Killarney and then dinghied back to town to eat fish and chips at the famous Mr. Perch’s. Leaving the lock system for the open waters of the Georgian Bay was a bit of a shock. We had become accustomed to following a path from lock to lock on mostly narrow waterways, and our choices of where to stop for an evening were really about how far we wanted to go in a day on the path. Now in the Georgian Bay we had no path to follow. We could go whereever we wanted. What to do? Where to go first? Obviously our big plan was to head west but should we zig or zag?

This week was spent on the Trent-Severn Waterway, a beautiful 244 mile windy canal system that connects rivers and lakes from Lake Ontario to the Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. The waterway boasts 44 locks. These Canadian locks are different from the ones we encountered on the Erie Canal in subtle ways. Most of the lock gates are manually operated. Two lock operators turn cranks to open the gates. That being said, we were stuck at the bottom of one lock for 5 hours due to a power outage that occurred during a thunderstorm. I guess power was needed for operation of the lock in some way!

By the end of the second week Bee Weems is in the waters of Ontario, Canada. We have been on 5 distinct waterways this week. Our last day on the Erie canal was Saturday, the 19th. We saw more people on the waterway that day then we did the whole week previously - quite a few local recreational fishermen, kayakers, waterskiiers, etc. But still no "loopers". At 9am Friday morning we pulled away from our home port on Asquith Creek off the Severn River. It was a perfect morning to begin our trip. Not a breath of wind on the water, low humidity, clear skies. We stopped at the Annapolis Marina to purchase fuel at prices that take your breath away. Then by 10:30am we were cruising up the Chesapeake Bay towards the Delaware Cut and onward to the Delaware Bay and Cape May.
