Chesapeake Bay
You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello
By Jim Favors
As Lisa and I pulled out of Solomons Yachting Center, our home base for the summer, I couldn’t help but reminisce about our five-month adventure in the Chesapeake Bay area. It seemed like just yesterday we were arriving when Quinton, our new harbormaster, helped us into our slip for the first time. It was here we began our exploration of the Bay, meeting the locals, taking road trips to Washington, having friends and family visits, immersing ourselves in local events, sampling the food, all the while trying to...... Crisfield, Maryland
A Cult Following
By Lisa Targal Favors
Before we left Michigan in 2005 to begin our first Great Loop, we joined America’s Great Loop Cruising Association (AGLCA) and our close friends Mike and Lynn Borer quickly started referring to our new affiliation as that “cult” we’d joined. Well, as we headed north up the Intracoastal Waterway last spring we made a decision to become members of another faction of the boating community, the Marine Trawler Owner’s Association (MTOA).

Somewhere in Time,” a movie starring the late Christopher Reeve, takes place in the farthest reaches of northern Michigan, on an island you can only get to by boat. The movie depicts a bygone era (1912) and was filmed at one of our favorite Michigan boating destinations, Mackinac Island and the beautiful Grand Hotel, which was first opened in 1887. Even today, the island’s residents have carefully preserved the charm and uniqueness of the turn of the 20th century. Much like our favorite Michigan port, we recently had the opportunity to discover that Tangier Island, Maryland, has a s...... Read More

Places we’ve never been to before always seem mysterious and harbor the element of many unknowns, at least for me. Before visiting a new harbor, I’ll conjure up images in my mind’s eye as to what the harbor will look like, I’ll wonder how well kept are the historical monuments, or how the town will manage to capture and hold our attention. This is especially true of destinations on the water that folks have told us about long before we got there to see it for ourselves. One such place is Saint Michaels, Maryland – a must-see, in my opinion, if you’re cruising...... Read More

Whenever someone asks Jim, usually a male friend or new acquaintance, “How does your wife Lisa like living on the boat?” Jim always gets a little smile on his face and usually says… “Well, I think I’m kind of lucky. I’m pretty sure Lisa loves boating even more than I do and that’s saying a lot.” I have heard him say this enough over the years, that now it has become the answer I use to respond when I am asked that same question.
Well it’s true, I do love living, working and playing on the boat. When I sit and think about what brought me ...... Read More

If there was a body malady called “restless body syndrome” (RBS) I think I could be the poster child for it. After sitting too long in one place I’ve got to start moving. It seems I’ve always been like this. If I’ve been sitting around home too long I want to go to the boat, if I’m on the boat too long… well I don’t really want to leave the boat I just want to move the boat to a new location. After sitting in Solomons, Maryland, for six weeks it was time to be on the move!
With my RBS in overdrive, it was way past time to get out of Dodge or i...... Read More

We’ve been in Solomons, Maryland, now for almost two months. There is an expansive area of coastline here and the boating community is diverse and abundant. We are still absorbing the culture and learning about the things that make this area so unique and actually quite fascinating. It hasn’t taken us long to understand what the people in Maryland are crazy about. You can hardly go a day, while living in this area, without hearing about, seeing, smelling or tasting some of the plen...... Read More

One of the pleasant aspects of having a single place to call home for five months is being able to immerse ourselves in the surrounding area by absorbing the local and regional history. Another aspect is the opportunity to acquaint ourselves with an area that is rich in nature and marine culture. With over 150 major rivers, 11,684 miles of shoreline, 64,000 square miles of surface water touching six states and the District of Columbia, Lisa and I are beginning to understand what a wealth of opportunities await us in the months ahead. There’s a lot to see, learn, and do.

With his last article, on northern migration, Jim left off when we were only part way up the ICW, 750 miles from our final destination for the summer, Solomons, Maryland. As we continued north, after our stay in Savannah, we still had many sights to see, people to meet and miles yet to travel with lots of water to cover and explore.
