Sunday, Sept. 14
Today is the final day of the boat show. “It’s Only Money” and the other Hylas boats had to be at the show by Sunday noon the week before the show because Hylas has one of the first spots in the show. It is a great location and I think the boats have been received by the public extremely well. In Newport, they have a 46, our 49 and a 54. I understand they will also have a 70 at the Annapolis show.

We are crusing home. Left Tuesday a.m. at 0530 because last night the wind was very disfavorable and would have been poor sailing or motoring. This morning we left Newport and have been motor sailing ever since. Diana is learning to work the sails more each time we are on the boat. She is becoming very knowledgeable. This leg of our trip is just going to be Jim R. (our capt.), Diana and myself. We are going to take turns sleeping during the day and have short watches at night with Diana and I on watch 1 and Jim on watch 2.

We have arrived in Rhode Island. We kept going through the afternoon and evening. We were well ahead of the storm and the decision was an easy and safe one. George and I had the 0200 a.m. to 0600 watch and I was exhausted afterwards and even though we would be in Newport within the next hour and a half, I collapsed in my berth. At 7:15 Diana woke me up and I slowly got myself dressed in my foul weather clothing, including my high boots. It was raining cats and dogs. It had been most of the night.

It is now Tuesday and we have arrived via airplane back at our home in Northern, VA to get a couple of days of work squeezed into our busy schedule. We return to Newport on Thursday for the beginning of the show.

We’ve never been to a boat show before, believe it or not. It is very interesting how the boats get packed into the docks with temporary docks surrounding the boats. It creates a maze of floating docks and boats that is pretty much continuous. It is quite the spectacle. What will be even more spectacular is the dismantling of this maze as the boats depart next Monday.

We got an early start and left on Wednesday night instead of waiting for Thursday evening. George, the final crew member, got to the boat at about 8 and we were underway by 9:20 p.m.

The idea is that we get 12 hours further away from the hurricane and further up the coast. Our current plan, if things hold is to go inside of long island, up the east river through NY. We will most likely be stopping tomorrow (Friday) at about 5:00 p.m. All the marine forecasts call for “excitement” beinning late Friday or early Saturday. As hurricane Hannah approaches the east coast, I and my hardy crew of three, prepare for our cruise from Gloucester Point, VA (near Yorktown) to Newport, RI for the boat show. It should prove to be an exciting trip and will be our first time exhibiting for a boat manufacturer.
We purchased our Hylas 49 sailboat, "It's Only Money", on August 13, 2008. Our maiden voyage from Ft. Lauderdale, where she was commissioned, to Gloucester Point, VA was interesting.
